Learn how to find the best keywords and tags for your YouTube video in order to get more views and subscribers on your channel!
Check the keywords search volume
If you want to check the search volume of the keywords your video is related to, you have 2 totally free tools that are super easy to use. First is keywordtool.io and my favorite Ubersuggest.
In order to write this post I searched for “best tags for youtube”. And these are the monthly search volumes it shows. I also got a big list of related keywords.
This is a quite easy research you can do BEFORE uploading or even creating a video.
So what now?
You have selected a bunch of keywords you find relating to your video and now just paste it in the tags section? NO.
Put the most important keyword in the video title
Try putting at least one keyword in the title (if it makes sense of course, if you have music video you can add some keywords related to a music genre for example)
Write article filled with keywords for the video description
Write an article and place it in the video description. It should contain 5-6 keywords you have selected and merged into text. Put couple of links pointing to both yours and authority websites related to your video/niche.
YouTube video tags section
Put only 2-3 keywords here. If it is not a popular niche you can go up to 5.
Key Points
Title still holds the big importance
Title still holds the big importance when YouTube crawls the videos. I was surprised recently when I found out that by just putting the main keyword at the start of the video title raised my video in rankings by 10 places. Try it on one of your videos but don’t experiment with this more then once a month, you’ll get search engines confused. The title length should not exceed 10 words cause that’s the number YouTube will read up to.
Content is the king
You probably heard before “Content is the king“. Well it still is. Google threats your video page just like the website’s page and will crawl your description (there’s also a voice words recognition), title, links, tags, channel. If the only thing it finds is an empty page overstuffed with related keywords it will just pass it and search for the better content – videos.
Consider video and description as an answer to your viewers needs
By creating a good article and informative description for your YouTube video, containing keywords people search for as a solution to their needs, you are telling YouTube what it is all about. That’s why we want to point to a subject related authority websites in the form of links! That way we are raising our flag by telling search engines “hey we hold the answers also” please present our video to your users.
Don’t overdo it!
Some of my videos don’t have tags at all but they rank for 30+ keywords and are very popular getting 100,000+ views a month each. Most of my videos have 2-3 tags,I don’t want to send wrong signal to YouTube that I’m trying too much to get ahead – instead of providing quality information for their viewers.
Best YouTube video hashtags?
You can easily add them in description like this: #besttagsforyoutubevideo
From my experience it doesn’t do any tricks. I did tests and haven’t found any positive effects or the rise in views. It can be one of the things YouTube will give more importance in the future if people start using it more.
Just use the same rule as for the tags: don’t over-stuff it or you will probably see results, negative ones. There’s a thing called keyword density, which applies when writing articles also. Don’t repeat words better replace it with related search terms, that’s how YouTube and search engines “think” these days.
Will I really see an increase in views by choosing the right keywords ans tags?
The answer is YES if you use the tactics described above, but it requires let’s say a day of work. Worth it? However even this alone won’t maybe be enough for your video to become popular and get more views. As an internet marketer I’ve been heavily using best sites to buy YouTube views for the past 8 years in order to faster rank my videos, learning SEO techniques and optimization I discussed along the way.
One of the neat FREE TRICKS to attract more viewers is to choose an attractive YouTube video custom thumbnail image.
